Slick Flick/s!
I give it to #LUCIA!! it did a brilliant job in exercising the almost non existing appetite for watching Kannada cinema (should I speak just for myself??); not just the watching but also crediting the audience with some intelligence. Which Simpleaag Ondh Love Story (SOLS) lost out on (would have loved for it to have been simply bolder). SOLS did bring in a fresh attitude with it (be it the way the trailers were created or how it was marketed), I did at-least go out and watch it in the theatre did I not!
So comes another movie that I put in the same cadre. Ulidavaru Kandanthe. I think this movie has managed in its way to do what Dil Chata Hai did in Bollywood, although not to the same degree. Drawing from various sources its inspiration, the movie manages to keep one waiting for the next moment of inspiration to be recognised and acknowledged!! (Managed to recognise a few did you not!!), so with its music (I’m not complaining about either). The use of nativity through the film, be it in the blend of Kannada (3 different dialects), Hulivesha and the subtlety in which the very bold form of Yakshagana is used are all very clever and convincing. The casting, bang on!! and ‘the characters’ convincing enough for you to listen to their story. A good friend of mine pointed out that Ritchi’s characterisation as an uber cool guy is a deviation from the ‘supposed time’, but that I think its the biggest draw for its female audience (wink wink). Could the particular chapter have a better pace? Probably. It would be wrong for me to say I did not enjoy the film. I did! recommended it even, like I did to Lucia. Where the movie won for me was how cleverly it has been styled, shot and edited! A job well done!! It did not put me at the edge of my seat, it did make me sit up and take notice.
Who knew!! who knew!! that one day we would get to slick!! One of the many directors, scriptwriters and producers said OK!! my audience is intelligent!! my audience can think and they will!! OR that my audience will at least have a good time watching what I created with a sense of conviction that they have something to think about?? and that its not film that’s remade.
